INTRODUCTION
The Hobart Cavy Club Inc. (HCC) was established on the 8th of March 1986.
The club was formed primarily to provide a fun-filled, relaxed atmosphere for the showing of Cavies, both pedigree and non-pedigree, for the whole family. This basic principal still applies today and forms the foundation of the club.
The HCC is affiliated with the Australian National Cavy Council (ANCC) through the Cavy Council of Tasmania. HCC provides representation to these organizations.
The HCC became an Incorporated Association under the Association and Incorporation Act on the fourth day of May 2009.
HCC conducts a number of major shows throughout the year including the Clubs Anniversary Show in March, Tasmanian Championship Show in June and the Royal Hobart Show in October. The Club also receives support from the Huon Agricultural Society and hosts a Cavy section at the Huon Show each year in November.
AIMS OF THE CLUB
To promote the breeding of true to type Cavies to standards recognized by the ANCC.
To promote a social organization for persons interested in Cavies as pets or for breeding to upgrade the status of Cavies.
To conduct Cavy shows as required by members.
To provide information to the public concerning the nature and care of Cavies.
As breeders we breed our cavies as close to the A.N.C.C (Australian National Cavy Council) standard as possible, each breed has their own standard as to what they should appear like, which is what qualified ANCC judges judge by.
We keep lines pure and do not cross breed any cavy, only breed like to like. This in the long run means we will have a higher standard and quality of cavies which is very important as we can no longer import stock from Overseas.
The Cavy fancy is just the same as any other fancy who are interested in the breeding and showing of their selected animal and believe it or not keeping cavies for Exhibition is a major hobby worldwide, especially in the UK.
There are many varieties and breeds of cavy.
Each variety have their own breeds and each breed has a qualified standard as to what they should appear like.
These standards can be viewed on the ANCC website.

PEDIGREE CAVY SHOWS
The breed classes are judged according the the A.N.C.C standard with each breed by a qualified A.N.C.C recognized judge. When showing in this section you will hear the term pedigree used alot rather than purebred. Pedigree really means the cavy is from known lines, and has a birth certificate to show it's heritage. It's the term we use instead of 'purebred'.
Every cavy shown in this section must be as close to the A.N.C.C standard as possible, no cavies with fur faults, or aren't entire, and/or have a major disqualification for their breed standard are not allowed. All cavies must be registered with the Hobart Cavy Club to enter and only members of the club can enter the breed classes.
Entries for these classes are posted out in our newsletter and entry forms must be returned to the address stated before the cut off date of the Wednesday before the show. Late entries may be taken at club shows but not for our major shows any scratchings must all be paid for as well. Entries cost $3 each cavy, all cavies must be registered with the Cavy Council of Tasmania to enter any shows.
Breeders are more than happy to help newer members out with cavies to get them started if they are interested in becoming a pedigree exhibitor and/or breeder. The best way to start in this fancy is to learn as much as you possibly can about Breeding, Showing & Exhibiting and select a breed you'd like to concentrate on and learn as much about that breed as you can before purchasing any cavies.
The next step is to place your name on a waiting list with a breeder of the breed you desire and wait for them to have some nice stock available for purchase, in the meantime its a good idea to start setting up your caviary and making sure you have enough cage space to accommodate your cavies and their future offspring, as numbers can grow quite fast.
